The Great Storm Of Brixham
Auditions: Sunday December 4th, 1.30pm, or by arrangement
Chestnut Heights Community Centre, 1 - 3 Poplar Close, Brixham (see FIND US page)

Telling the story of the Great Storm of Brixham, which happened in 1866, and in which over 100 lives were lost, and which tragedy caused Brixham to have her first lifeboat the year after. A moving tribute to Brixham's fishing industry, written from historical records. To be performed at various events during the spring of 2012, including Teignmouth Drama Festival, and at an event in Brixham to raise money for a memorial to the fishermen of Brixham past, present and future.
Open to all aged 16 to 116 - younger from age 12 up strictly with parents written permission.

Existing and new members welcome, regardless of theatrical experience. You need to be reliable, (no timewasters thank you!) and able to attend rehearsals at least weekly. Please message if you want other information.

Tagore and Dartington: An Exhibition

This event is part of Tagore 150 – a year of celebration marking 150 years since the birth of Rabindranath Tagore.

This documentary exhibition explores the huge influence that the Indian polymath Rabindranath Tagore had (and continues to have) on Dartington. A time line charts the lives of Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst and the close relationship Leonard had with Tagore. The ideas and ideals that the Elmhirsts brought to Dartington were, in part, inspired by Tagore’s ideology. In turn Dorothy was directly influential by supporting Tagore’s Indian projects and Leonard’s pioneering work there.

After Leonard and Dorothy moved to Dartington in 1925 Tagore visited and he maintained a close correspondence with Leonard. Dorothy continued to support projects in India and the connections grew through exchanges of artists, educators, musicians and dancers. Dartington College of Arts became the first place in Europe to offer Indian music on the curriculum. The Indian connection and influence has lasted until the present.

During the first week of the exhibition calligrapher Susanne Haines will be in the gallery working on quotations from Tagore’s works. Community artist Paula Cloonan will be adding her sketches of the Tagore Festival to the exhibition as that the week of celebrations progress. The Devon Guild of Craftsmen is working with Dartington to place artists and makers in schools following Tagore themes. Later in the summer the exhibition will travel to the Bhavan Centre in London.

The making of the tree bell
Thursday 19 May
The Tree Bell is a response to Tagore’s writings, philosophies and poems. The bell, commissioned by The Arts at Dartington as a sculpture for the festival incorporates a text by Alice Oswald distilled from her readings of Tagore and forms a textual link to the man. The bell and tree symbolically engage with the ideas of thought, contemplation, movement, making, mater and land but also provide a playful combination of forms for this little bronze object. The bell is a sculpture to be used by all.
