The Gallery, Dartington Hall, Totnes 29 April – 28 June 2011
This event is part of Tagore 150 – a year of celebration marking 150 years since the birth of Rabindranath Tagore. This documentary exhibition explores the huge influence that the Indian polymath Rabindranath Tagore had (and continues to have) on Dartington. A time line charts the lives of Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst and the close relationship Leonard had with Tagore. The ideas and ideals that the Elmhirsts brought to Dartington were, in part, inspired by Tagore’s ideology. In turn Dorothy was directly influential by supporting Tagore’s Indian projects and Leonard’s pioneering work there. After Leonard and Dorothy moved to Dartington in 1925 Tagore visited and he maintained a close correspondence with Leonard. Dorothy continued to support projects in India and the connections grew through exchanges of artists, educators, musicians and dancers. Dartington College of Arts became the first place in Europe to offer Indian music on the curriculum. The Indian connection and influence has lasted until the present. During the first week of the exhibition calligrapher Susanne Haines will be in the gallery working on quotations from Tagore’s works. Community artist Paula Cloonan will be adding her sketches of the Tagore Festival to the exhibition as that the week of celebrations progress. The Devon Guild of Craftsmen is working with Dartington to place artists and makers in schools following Tagore themes. Later in the summer the exhibition will travel to the Bhavan Centre in London.
